Model of the Royal Navy Sloop HMS Resolution

Provenance: Kriegstein Collection, New York, New York; Maritime Collection of Naval Historian Frank Fox, Birmingham, Alabama.

Notes: The ship launched at Whitby in 1770 and was acquired the following year by the Royal Navy. Originally named HMS Drake, it was re-christened in 1771 as Resolution. Captain James Cook made his second (1772-1775) and third (1776-1780) Pacific voyages in the Resolution, and it was the first ship to cross the Antarctic Circle. After Cook's death, it was captained by Charles Clerke, who had been his Second Lieutenant. In 1782 it left the Port of Manila after loading supplies, and was never seen again.
