Monumental Marble and Bronze Grand Tour Column

fourth quarter 19th century, Italian, on a black marble base, the Siena marble fluted Corinthian column decorated with a bronze figure of the reviled Emperor Phocas, sitting on a rectangular plinth with a Latin inscription on a stepped base.
h. 40", w. 15", d. 15"

Provenance: Estate of Victor and Marie Cascio, Monroe, Louisiana.


  • Condition: **The stepped base with very scattered nicks/dings to edges along with scattered minor old fissures/hairlines. Losses around the shaft ring above its molded base. The fluted shaft with two small old losses and an unrelated ragged hairline around the mid-shaft (no signs of instability). The shaft necking with a reseated piece and two very faint opposing hairlines. A sliver loss to the abacus edge (approx. 1/8" x 3/4") and a ding to one corner tip.
    All of the above consistent with age.
