sheet 12" x 10-1/2"

  • Provenance: The Collection of Reverend Gerard F. Young, Darrow, Louisiana.

Notes: First visiting New Orleans in 1938, Morris Henry Hobbs was immediately intrigued by the historic city and found the community of artists and writers welcoming. With the goal of attracting locals and tourists, Harmanson's Art and Book Store at 333 Royal Street successfully sold prints, postcards and calendars by local artists including Hobbs.

In the etching offered here, Hobbs selected various images representative of New Orleans and Louisiana, all placed around St. Louis Cathedral, including Parfum Hove, Lafitte Smithy, Bourbon St., Cabildo, Cafe Brulot, alligator, pelican, and Mardi Gras. Hobbs included the coquetier which references the story that Louis Antoine Amedee Peychaud served brandy laced with his bitters in an eggcup translated in French as a coquetier. According to tradition, the term "cocktail" became the anglicized word.
