New York Neoclassical Coin Silver Pitcher

second quarter 19th century, by Henry Salisbury & Co., fl. 1835-1839, New York, New York, with ovoid body, waisted collar, acanthus-crested and -mounted handle and pedestal foot, decorated with milled beaded-edge acanthus banding, inscribed "George W. Lay / from his Father / John Lay".
h. 13", l. 8", dia. 5-1/2"; 33.36 t. oz.

  • Provenance: The Estate of Stella R. Sharp, Natchez, Mississippi.
Note: George Washington Lay was born on July 26, 1798 in Catskill, Greene county, New York, the son of merchant and Revolutionary patriot John Lay (1760-1845) and his wife Phoebe Lee (1862-1835). He studied classics at Hamilton College and was admitted to the bar in 1820. He practiced in Batavia, Genesee county, New York and served as county treasurer 1825-1831. He was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1833 and served two terms; the present lot is likely a paternal gift for his Congressional service. He was a member of New York State Assembly in 1840 and was appointed Charge d'Affaires to Sweden 1842-1845 by fellow Whig, President John Tyler. He married Olive Foote in 1821 and had three children. He died on October 21, 1860 and is buried in Batavia Cemetery.
