Rare Pair of American Rococo Revival Carved Walnut Library Chairs, mid-19th century, attributed to Charles White, Philadelphia, one bearing a stamp on the inner rear leg, "C.W. PAT.", each with a padded crest rail above a carved back depicting intertwined dolphins and carved griffin-arm fronts, ending in large paw feet, covered in simulated ostrich leather upholstery, h. 33", w. 24", d. 22". There is a vintage photograph of William Vanderbilt sitting in the same chair. This chair also appears in a drawing in Mr. Vanderbilt's House and Collection, by George Barrie, Boston.

  • Condition: Both are in very good condition. The frames and legs are strong and sturdy. The back of one shows faint shrinkage lines along the glue seams where the wood is layered up. Some dryness to the rear legs. Casters appear original. Upholstery is excellent. They are not laminated like Belter or Meeks furniture. They are solid walnut with glued up stock as in layers going up the back.
