Pair of American Renaissance Revival Walnut Armchairs

third quarter 19th century, each with a carved crest centered by an electrotype copper plaque depicting an allegorical bust, closed arms with Columbia-carved supports, and trumpet legs.
h. 40"

Notes: Columbia-carved chairs of this form were popular in the years prior to the American Centennial. They were crafted by a number of makers, possibly after a design associated with John Jelliff.

  • Condition: **In overall good condition, with an older refinish and minor mars and wear consistent with age and use.

All legs are firmly affixed to the rails with no movement noted at their joints.

On one chair, there is a chip to the uppermost turning of the trumpet leg, about 3/4" wide, 3/8" high and 1/4" deep.

The other chair exhibits a straight line of wood filler to a gap between the arm and stile. There is no movement or play at that point.

Upholstery is in good to very good condition with minor wear.

NOTE: These are constructed of rosewood, NOT walnut.
