  • Provenance: Estate of Catherine Denkmann Wentworth, Paris, France; Santa Barbara, California; by descent to the family.

Chester Billings (1829-1897) and his son Henry Baremore Billings (1874-1928) were, around 1896, successors to Randal, Baremore & Co., one of New York's oldest and most prestigious diamond dealers which dated back to the 1840s. Chester died soon after the incorporation, and his son Henry's ambition was to compete with New York luxury goods dealers like Tiffany and Black, Starr & Frost; to this end, he opened a silver manufactory and a handsome showroom on Fifth Avenue. The quality of Billings & Son silver was easily comparable to those with whom they strived to compete, but the Panic of 1907 delivered an ill-timed economic blow from which they could not recover; the company filed for bankruptcy in January 1910. Their silver is a little-known and short-lived but still shining remnant of the end of the Gilded Age.
