Pair of Bronzes of Eros Carrying a Dolphin and a Swan

ca. 1900, Italian, the patinated bronzes cast after the 1st century CE Roman bronzes excavated in Pompeii in the late 18th century.
h. 25-1/2" w. 10", d. 13" and "h. 23", w. 10", d. 13", respectively

  • Condition: **The figural sculptures were originally designed to function as either garden sculptures or as fountains as the swan and dolphin mouths hide spigots and the bronze bases, if unscrewed, reveal intake water supply apertures under one foot of each Eros. Swan head and wings on each Eros were cast separately and then attached. Wings on both appear to have been reinforced some time ago. There are some scattered losses to patination and oxidation throughout, which are to be expected with age and outdoor use. Structurally sound and in overall good condition.
