Pair of Chinese Export Porcelain Phoenixes

19th century, probably Daoguang period (1820-1850), each phoenix modeled perched on a pierced rockwork base, one leg raised clasping a toadstool, with wings tucked neatly behind and tail plumage curling to one side, painted in the famille rose palette of pinks, yellows, greens and blues.
h. 24", w. 7"

Provenance: Leo and Doris Hodroff Collection.

  • Condition: **On one phoenix, the crown has been repaired with two small chips still visible. One-third of one talon is lacking and the tip is lacking on another one with a chip to the rockwork beside it. There are two tiny chips - one to a rear feather tip, and the other to the circular base of the tail. On the second phoenix, there are two small chips - one to the rockwork beneath the talons, and the other near the base. In otherwise good condition as damage is minimal and not readily noticeable.
