19th century, each with three-dimensional carved battle scenes and panels of birds and foliage.
h. 18", w. 8-1/2", d. 3"

  • Provenance: The Estate of Bonnie Bolding Swearingen, Birmingham, Alabama.
  • Condition: **In overall good condition. On one example, there are two mortise openings on either side where they were previously attached to another element. There are small losses to both ends of the piercework crest at the top of the stage, and there is a loss to the upper left corner with cracking and tiny losses to the surrounding lacquer. On the second example, there is one mortise opening on the side and two shrinkage cracks to the back. There are small losses to the right side of the rockwork stage and to the ends of the piercework crest. Three of the hands/forearms of the figures at the lower center are lacking. Carved floral and figural reliefs are in very good condition and largely intact with no notable losses. Both elements with scattered nicks, scratches and minor losses to lacquer and gilding as is to be expected with age, material and use.
