Pair of Chinese Silk-Embroidered Panels

fourth quarter 19th century, each rectangular panel intricately embroidered with idyllic scenes depicting figures at leisure on terraces and by a river, with various pagodas, bridges and houses in the surround, embellished with trees, rockwork, birds and butterflies below stylized scrolling clouds, later mounted and framed.

  • Condition: Generally good condition with soiling and darkening of silk backing. Threads maintain color intensity and stitches maintain structural integrity. Embroidery with figure in boat: tears to silk at lower left and mid-right. Embroidery with central pagoda: tears along upper and lower right edge, upper and lower left edge, mid-right in background, lower left in tree. Frames with scattered nicks, losses and abrasions. Frames appear to be gilt-painted composition.
