Pair of French Terracotta Lions by Mandeville & Combeleran

ca. 1880-1905, the lions in a heraldic sejant stance with paws resting on shields molded with aesthetic sunflowers, on oval bases impressed "Mandeville & Combeleran Fab. et Produits Ceramique, Castelnaudary (Aude)".

Mandeville Pottery, located in Castelnaudary (Aude), France was among the most sought-after makers of its time. "Mandeville & Combeleran" (1880-1905), was followed by "Mandeville-Bernier" from 1905 until the firm's closure in 1935.

  • Provenance: Kevin Stone Antiques, The Collection of Kevin Stone & Mark Diamond.
  • Condition: **Each with scattered staining. One lion missing tip to his tongue and a loss to his mane about 4" x 3", and a few minor, scattered chips to the top of the mane. The shield with a tight hairline to one corner. The other lion with a loss to base of the shield, and a flake to scroll edge, several scattered flakes along the lower edge, and a tight hairline crack across the back of its body. Both formerly fitted with eyeballs that are now missing.
