Pair of George III Sterling Silver Sauceboats

hallmarked London, 1775-1776, by William Cattell, of bulbous batteau form with embossed beaded rim, crested double "C"-scroll handle and raised on three shell-crested scroll-and-pad feet.
h. 4-1/4", l. 6", w. 3-1/4"; 10.33 total t. oz.

  • Condition: **Moderate surface wear - bumps, scuffs, pinpoint dings, etc. - commensurate with age and use. One boat has a 1/4" repaired tear on the rim, next to the handle, while the other has repairs on both sides of the handle at the rim where the handle has been re-attached; both repairs are professional and well-executed. No monograms or removals. Each piece hallmarked (on the underside) with: 1) the sterling lion passant; 2) the London crowned leopard's head; 3) the date letter "U" for 1775-1776; and 4) the "WC" maker's mark of William Cattell. The marks are lightly worn on one boat, and very worn on the other.
