h. 10-1/2", dia. 11-1/2"

Notes: Francois Durand (fl. 1828-1874) was a student of renowned Empire silversmith Jean-Baptiste-Claude Odiot and succeeded the shop of Senatuer Joseph Dupezard in 1828. He also served as chief supplier of the atelier of Jacques-Henri Fauconnier in the 1830s and 40s, and received the Royal Warrant to Ferdinand Philippe, duc d'Orleans. This brought him numerous noble commissions during the July Monarchy and Second Empire, including the present lot. The arms here are those of Henri-Charles-Anne-Timoleon-Marie, comte de Cosse-Brissac, Spanish Grandee and Prince of Robecque (1822-1887) who married, on April 25, 1851, Louise Marie Mathea de Veau de Robiac (1829-1914).

  • Condition: **In quite good used condition, with no dents, breaks or repairs noted and no condition issues noted beyond some light wear consistent with age and use. No losses to the silvering, but the bright interior of the dome and base suggest professional re-plating at some point. Light knife scratches on the plateaux. Both retain the original two-piece white metal burner; one has a pierced silverplate cover, likely not original. Each piece stamped on the dome, the base and the plateau with the Durand silverplate mark and "Durand a Paris". A very handsome pair.
