Pair of Painted Wood and Patinated Metal Blackamoor Candelabra

first quarter 20th century, Italian, the kneeling figures of blackamoors dressed in patterned enameled and parcel-gilt clothing, holding cornucopias set with metal floriform candle branches, on coved parcel-gilt bases decorated with hand-painted flowers, on associated French gilt-bronze-mounted ebonized pedestals.
h. 62-1/2", dia. 14-1/2"

Provenance: Estate of Victor and Marie Cascio, Monroe, Louisiana.

  • Condition: **Unusual lot in "as found", estate condition.
Both figures with varying degrees of old cracks (some with old filler) and restoration (some pegged).
The incised, painted and parcel-gilt clothing pieces exhibit some degree of rubbing. The male figure with a surface loss on one breast (touched up) and a ragged surface loss to the pants in back.
One candelabrum lacking a small flower.
The associated ebonized stands with well-cast, crisp mounts. All exhibit varying degrees of oxidation. One upper bronze band a substitution. One swag wired in place but simply needs a small compatible nail. Both with scattered scuffs and scrapes primarily around the bases. One example with a surface loss at the base edge (see online and catalogue photo).
All of the above consistent with age.
