Pair of Rare George III Celestial and Terrestrial Globes

ca. 1800-1802, labeled "T. M. Bardin, 16 Salisbury Square, London", both dated 1800, on period turned mahogany stands with bronze fittings.

Provenance: Private Collection of Jack Warner, Tuscaloosa, Alabama.

Notes: Included in the 1976 sale of Carter Hall, Millwood, Virginia, conducted by Sotheby Parke Bernet. Carter Hall was built by the grandson of Robert "King" Carter, and used by Stonewall Jackson as his headquarters for a time during the Civil War.


  • Condition: **Both globes have notable losses to both poles with smaller losses and cracks scattered throughout. The north pole on the terrestrial globe also exhibits signs of past repairs with an adhesive. There are losses, abrading and significant toning to the paper on both globes and orbits. Both bottom axes have been repaired (soldered and screws). Bronze elements have accretions and oxidation. Wood bases have scattered nicks and scratches. Condition is as to be expected with age, material and use.
