Pair of Regency Mahogany Firescreens

early 19th century, each with an elongated octagonal screen featuring a central oval with a finely worked embroidery, one of a lady placing flowers on Shakespeare's grave, and the other of a lady praying, within a floral garland, raised on a tapering square standard to a stepped square base with satinwood banding and resting on bun feet.
h. 55"

  • Condition: **In good "as found" condition. Both firescreens exhibit normal wear, shrinkage and indications of age and use.

The fabric in the frames exhibits a number of tears, generally horizontal, to the silk background. The tears do not appear in the central needlework panels.

The frames and panels maintain their position when raised or lowered. The columns are slightly loose at their junction with the base, but remain functional.

There are several losses to the stringing at the outside edges of the stepped blocks on the base. The surface of the bases exhibit some light water spots.
