Pair of Regency Mahogany Serpentine Knife Boxes, ca. 1811, the boxes outlined with ebonized stringing and set with silverplated ring pulls and escutcheons, retaining their fitted interiors, h. 14-1/2", w. 9", d. 11". These knife boxes come with a reputed family history, from Dorothy Lansdale of Moore Hall, Kent County, England, who married Stephen Sawyer of Winfield, Kent County, England in 1811, and received the knife boxes at the time of her wedding. The couple emigrated to the United States, and she died in Lyme Township, Huron County, Michigan. They descended to Thomas Mitchell Sawyer of Hillsdale, Michigan, and on to a friend in 1962.
