Pair of Wallace and Lithgow, Louisville, Kentucky, Iron Garden Urns on Stands

third quarter 19th century, in the "Woodbury" pattern, the ribbed urns of campana form and mounted with ringed lion's-head handles, on hexagonal paneled bases, with the molded label "Wallace Lithgow & Co Louisville KY 1852".

Notes: Wallace and Lithgow was founded in 1836 and operated under that name until Wallace's death in 1861, at which point the firm continued in operation as J. S. Lithgow and Co. James S. Lithgow, one of the principals of the company, was elected to the Louisville City Council in 1848. In 1866, the mayor was impeached and Lithgow was elected to the position of mayor, where he served until his impeached predecessor was reinstated by a court order in 1867.


  • Condition: **Very heavy cast iron with old brown rust. Screws replaced with hex bolts. Foot of one urn cracked and repaired. The pedestal tops have been re-welded at the seams.
