Fine Pair of William IV Sterling Silver Wine Coolers hallmarked London, 1837, by Benjamin Smith III (1793-1850; free 1821), each of broadly gadrooned bucket form, flaring to form a fluted and scalloped rim, with robust bifurcated acanthus scroll handles, with chased calyx en suite above a foot comprising four fluted and scalloped overlapping "leaves", with fitted detachable liners, h. 10", dia. 9", 234.28 total t. oz.

  • Condition: Overall Condition: Good. Some scattered surface scrapes and dings consistent with age, but generally in very good condition with no breaks or repairs or significant dents noted. Superlative chasing. Hallmarked (on the side) with: 1) the sterling lion passant; 2) the London crowned leopard's head; 3) the date letter "B" for 1837-1838; 4) the William IV bust duty mark; and 5) the "BS" maker's mark of Benjamin Smith III. The feet and one liner part-marked. (The other liner is unmarked, but appears to be original and solid silver.) A very attractive and unusual pair.
