(American/Louisiana, 1903-1964)

"Women on Their Way to Market, Dominica, Lesser Antilles"

gelatin silver print
later printing.
Unframed.
20" x 20"

  • Provenance: Collection of the artist; Collection of John Clemmer, New Orleans, Louisiana; Private collection, Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

After reading Lafacadio Hearn's memoir "Two Years in the French West Indies", Paul Ninas became intrigued by the Caribbean, and, in 1930, he bought a coconut and lime plantation on the island of Dominica. Ninas enjoyed the simple, exotic, and romantic life of an island artist. Ninas intended to use his photographs as tools for these paintings and drawings, but he revealed a photographic eye as he captured the rainforests, people, and way of life on the tropical island.
