Important Paul Storr (1771-1844) "Ashburnham" Pattern Sterling Silver Tureen-on-Stand hallmarked London, 1836-1838, part of the service made for Bertram, 4th Earl of Ashburnham (1797-1878), of bulbous oval form with shaped rim, chased with honeycomb pattern centering small blossoms on a matte ground, with outscrolled handles and four scrolling feet, the fitted, domed lid with knop finial and decorated en suite, lifting to reveal the fitted detachable liner, the whole presented on a conforming stand with bellflower banding, the body and lid with the chased arms of the Earl of Ashburnham, overall, h. 10-1/4", l. 15", w. 11-1/2", 186.78 t. oz. This tureen, with its Persian-inspired pattern, was one part of one of the last major commissions of Paul Storr before his retirement in 1839. The full extent of the set of not known, but the number and scale of known pieces suggest it was an immense service. The pattern was widely copied well into the Victorian era.


  • Condition: Overall Condition: Very Good. No condition issues noted beyond the light wear consistent with age. No dents, breaks or repairs. Superlative workmanship. Hallmarked (on the lid sleeve, the liner side, the body underside) with: 1) the sterling lion passant; 2) the London crowned leopard's head (lacking on the lid and liner); 3) the date letter "B" for 1836-1837; 4) the William IV bust duty mark; and 5) the "PS" maker's mark of Paul Storr. The stand similarly marked, but with the date letter "C" for 1837-1838 and the Victoria bust duty mark. The detachable finial part marked. The body and stand additionally stamped "Storr & Mortimer". All pieces with scratch part and/or weight information (lid "No. 1 / 33 oz. 16 [dwt.] / 1"; body "No. 2 / 73 oz. / 2"; liner "No. 2 . 38 oz. 4 [dwt.]; and stand "2"). A superlative piece in every respect.
