As a young art instructor, Paul Wunderlich studied with Emil Nolde (German, 1867-1956) and Oskar Kokoschka (Austrian, 1886-1980). In the 1970s, he began to explore sculpture, incorporating mythological, surreal or fantastical images, often rendering these images to their most rudimentary, yet easily identifiable, elements and placing them against expansive, empty backgrounds. A recipient of numerous accolades and awards, his work is in the permanent collections of such institutions as the British Museum, the Victoria and Albert Museum, Museum of Modern Art, New York and Bibliotheque Nationale, Paris.
