We make it human and we call it love
This wintering is my own and not the world's,
    Although the world is wintering.

    Peter Sacks
    From the poem Night Ferry

Strips of cloth twisted, pierced, torn and even singed. Scattered words and phrases, partially obscured by splashes of paint. Manipulated found and repurposed objects – lace, paper, wool roving, corrugated cardboard – all meandering lyrically across the canvas. The paintings by South African poet and artist Peter Sacks are of the type that require active participation from the viewer and demand close examination. What appears from a quick glance at a distance to merely be a thoughtful exploration of shadow, texture and form, reveals itself upon a closer, more critical look to be a carefully and thoughtfully composed work with layers of meaning referencing history, literature and poetry.

Sacks' painstaking technique often requires months or years to complete, and many of his works have upwards of eight or nine layers. Hidden within the inherent abstraction of the works are often identifiable elements. Glen Lowry, the Director of the Museum of Modern Art, New York, has referred to Sack's paintings as "…ravishingly beautiful…global, in the best sense of the word".
