    Notes: Born in Hartford, Connecticut, Philip Kappel studied art at Pratt Institute in New York. He worked for several shipping companies where he documented their ships and sailors. Well-traveled, Kappel was particularly enamored with New Orleans, and created a series of etchings of the street life in the French Quarter which he included in the book Louisiana Gallery, The River Country and New Orleans, published in 1950.
