Notes: Jean-Baptiste Colbert (1619-1683), finance minister to Louis XIV, assembled a team of France's most talented and celebrated engravers to create a visual record of the glory of the Sun King: his art collection, palaces, gardens, medals and treasures. By 1670 the engravings were printed into volumes, and by 1679 the enormous cost of production of the undertaking led Colbert to offer collections of the prints for sale to the public. The project was continued by his successors, and in 1727 a new edition of prints was issued with, for the first time, a catalogue of the engraved plates in the Royal Collection. The present lot is one of the rare copies of this first catalogue. (Note that this is an inventory only of the engravings and does not contain illustrations of them.)
