Rare Early Map of the 17th-Century Louisiana Province

by Johann Baptist Homann (German, 1664-1724), after Father Louis Hennepin's 1687 account, hand-colored copper engraved map with Latin and French descriptions, published Nuremberg, 1717-1720.
Matted, glazed and framed.
sight 19-1/2" x 23-3/8"

Notes: Homann's striking map charts the course of the Mississippi River through the Louisiana Province, which extends from the Dakotas and the Great Lakes through Louisiana and parts of western Mississippi and eastern Texas. The Florida territory and the nascent American colonies on the eastern seaboard are also delineated in separate colors, offering a rare glimpse into the early settlements of North America. The map, based on the reports of the missionary Father Hennepin, closely follows Guillaume Delisle's famous map of the same region, and is superbly illustrated with inset engravings and annotations that include many Indian tribes, explorer routes and forts.
