Rare Massachusetts Federal Coin Silver Spoon

fourth quarter 18th century, by Seth Storer Coburn (1744-aft. 1796), Springfield, Massachusetts, in the traditional "Old English" pattern, with shell heel, monogrammed "RB / 4".
l. 4-7/8"; 0.40 t. oz.

  • Provenance: The Estate of Stella R. Sharp, Natchez, Mississippi.

Note: Seth Storer Coburn, silversmith and patriot, was born on December 29, 1744 in Boston, the son of silversmith Seth Coburn (1718- ca. 1752) and likely apprenticed to his uncle John Coburn 1758-1765. He was related by blood and marriage to some of the most important Boston silversmiths of the era: John Coney, Ebenezer Coburn, John Edwards and James Ridgway. He worked briefly in Boston for Zachariah Brigden before settling in Springfield, where he served as a private and marched on Lexington in April 1775 and married Elizabeth Day (1735/36-1795) on November 12, 1775. Property records suggest a marginal existence, with Coburn selling most of his wife's dowry property piecemeal over the years, purchasing none himself, sued for payments and even jailed for the inability to pay them. As a result, very little silver was likely produced by him, with only two pieces known in public collections: a nutmeg grater in the Museum of Fine Arts made for "Mary Storer" (he had two great aunts by that name) and a spoon in the Henry Francis DuPont Winterthur Museum. He appeared in the first Federal census of 1790, and in 1796 – a year after his wife's death – he sold his home in Springfield. Nothing further is known of him.
