Rare Mitchell, Vance & Co. Patinated Spelter and Brass Gas Newel Post Light

ca. 1876, in the form of an elaborately dressed soldier holding a pike, mounted with a gas jet and period etched and frosted glass shade, the figure retaining a rich surface, dressed in armor and wearing a cape, his helmet mounted with a dragon, with molded chainmail under his breastplate and standing on a cove-molded base mounted with lion's-head ring pulls, the frosted 2-5/8" fitter shade decorated with three different classical Roman portrait medallions joined by a band of Greek-key cutting, retaining its original gas line, not electrified.

  • Condition: **In good "as found" condition. No sign of damage to the figure. There is, however, a small hole on the left side of the figure (probably where his sword was mounted). The etching of this figure in the Mitchell, Vance catalogue shows the warrior with a sword at his left side. The shade has some old chips along the lower edge of the fitter lip. Some of the chips have been lightly polished out.
