Notes: In the late nineteenth century, St. Tammany Parish was a remote, pastoral area bordered by Lake Pontchartrain and surrounded by the waterways of Bogue Chitto River, Abita River, Bayou Castine, and Honey Island Swamp. Because of frequent outbreaks of yellow fever in New Orleans, St. Tammany Parish became a designated haven, and the waters were said to have medicinal properties. Accessible primarily by boat, Richard Clague ventured to the north shore, often with a group of students, to paint the distinctive landscape. Regarded as the "father of Louisiana landscape tradition", Clague favored the French Barbizon landscape tradition of painting en plein air and experiencing nature directly.

In the present lot, a small herd of cattle are featured, grazing amongst the Spanish moss-draped live oak trees. Along the bayou shore, figures, including a man on horseback, gather beside a small rural cabin. The tranquil, pastoral life depicted embodies both the restorative allure of St. Tammany Parish, as well as Clague's enduring commitment to Louisiana landscape.
