Notes: The writer Elena Poniatowska and architectural photographer David Payne collaborated on the book Guerrero Viejo, which documented the lost Mexican city. In the early 1950s, the American and Mexican governments collaborated in damming the Rio Grande with the anticipation of benefiting both countries. A consequence of the damming was the gradual submersion of the colonial city of Guerrero beneath the water of the man-made reservoir. The citizens were displaced and forced to abandon their homeland and sense of community. Payne's photographs document the current state of the few remaining historic structures.
