Sang Chang-cho (Korean, 20th Century), "Four Eight-Panel Screens of Royal Seals", 1970, ink on paper mounted on silk and laquered teak, each panel 69-1/2" x 17-3/4". Provenance: Private collection, San Antonio, Texas; by family repute aided by a former adjunct curator of the National Museum of Korea, Seoul, South Korea. This lot includes four of the total of eight screens produced that incorporate all but three of the royal seals of the twenty-seven kings of the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910). Sang wrote the remarks beside each seal and the longer historical text.


  • Condition: With corresponding booklet provided by the Cultural Management Property Office, Cultural Property Museum, Seoul, Korea. Scattered nicks, abrasions and minor dents to the backs of each screen. Fading to blue fabric mount with some small tears along the edges. The calligraphy and seal panels have some scattered small spots of discoloration but the color maintains intensity and the paper maintains structural integrity. No tears. Scuffs and abrasions to wooden frame.
