  • Provenance: The Collection of Deborah & Eli Tullis, New Orleans, Louisiana.

Note: The Annual St. Petersburg-Havana Regatta began on March 30, 1930. Among the fleet of eleven entries making the 284-mile journey was Garner Hugh Tullis' Windjammer. Built in 1924 by Morton Johnson, Tullis purchased the 58-foot schooner from Edward Crabbe of the Tom's River Yacht Club in 1929, sailing the yacht from Norfolk, Virginia to New Orleans, with stops at St. Simons' Island, Palm Beach and Miami (and an unexpected board-and-search by prohibition agents).
The Windjammer placed third over the line in the regatta but won first in its class. Garner competed in the next two annual events, coming in third in 1931 but winning both overall and in his class in 1932, for which the present lot was awarded. Tullis won a third time in 1948 with the Windjammer II (66', built 1947 by the Burger Boat Company), and sailed in the final Regatta in 1959. He died aboard the Windjammer II off the coast of Apalachicola, Florida while sailing to St. Petersburg on February 18, 1966.
