Six Edwardian and Later Specialty Walking Sticks

including a:

Snuff Mull Walking Stick, the grip handle a horn snuff mull with hinged silver cap and mounts hallmarked Birmingham, 1912-1913, John Grinsell & Sons, with malacca shaft and horn tip, l. 36".

Snuff Box Walking Stick, the pommel handle a brass navette-shaped snuffbox, the hinged lid stamped "Simon Ettle / Oldland Common / NR. Bristol / 1908", with stained bamboo shaft and brass tip, l. 36".

Sword Walking Stick, the pommel handle withdrawing to reveal a steel blade of square section, the handle and shaft composed of used matchsticks, with horn tip, l. 37-1/2".

Blackthorn Walking Stick, with integral crook handle, the shaft with a flat-head nail driven through and wrapped around, the tip lacking, l. 35".

Ear Trumpet Walking Stick, the grip handle a brass "London Horn" ear trumpet with gutta percha ear tip, with malacca shaft and brass tip, l. 35-1/2".

Horse Measuring Walking Stick, the integral crook handle fitted with a silverplate-capped extending boxwood measuring stick calibrated in hands and centimeters on opposing sides (9.3 hands/99 cm to 16.2 hands/168 cm), with extending brass right angle set with a spirit level, with bamboo shaft and brass tip, l. 36" (extending to 64").


Provenance: Estate of John Elliot Bradshaw, Houston, Texas.


  • Condition: **SNUFF MULL: In good condition.
    SNUFF BOX: Hinged brass cover with SHALLOW denting, the brass tip with general denting and general wear consistent with age. Snuffbox interior lined with brown lizard along the bottom and containing tobacco leaves.
    SWORD: In generally good condition. Handle with scattered old losses and repairs to matches with old glue for that purpose visible in spots.
    BLACKTHORN: In good condition with tip lacking.
    EAR TRUMPET: Scattered shallow dents to brass ear trumpet and general wear to the tip.
    HORSE MEASURING: Lower two portions of the bamboo shaft with several vertical splits, one split open with narrow adjacent 1/2" loss. The silverplate cover dented but functional. The brass right angle slightly bent above the glass level.

    All of the above consistent with age and use.
