Six-Piece Louis XV-Style Giltwood Salon Suite

late 19th century, consisting of two fauteuils and four side chairs, all with a slightly domed and padded back surmounted by a foliate shield crest, the padded seat raised above a like-carved frieze on cabriole legs headed by a foliate capital and ending in scrolled toes, all upholstered in floral-patterned tapestry.
fauteuil h. 40", side chair h. 37-1/2"

Provenance: Collection of Reuben L. "Buzz" Harper, Natchez, Mississippi.

  • Condition: **In overall good condition. The surfaces exhibit rubbing to the gilt and scattered inpainting and regilding. The upholstery appears to be of the period, and probably original. It exhibits normal wear, staining, possible minor repairs a few small areas with separation between the threads and other normal indications of age and use. The cording/trim and upholstery on the verso of the backs is probably later.

All chairs are functional and sturdy. Arms, legs and backs of the armchairs are tight. Three of the side chairs exhibit a very small amount of movement at the juncture of the stiles and seat rails. The tapestry seats are slightly faded and soiled but not torn.
