the pattern designed in 1862 by John Rudolph Wendt (1826-1907), New York, New York, including:
a three-piece youth set, retailed by Newell Harding & Co., Boston, Massachusetts, inscribed and dated on the reverse "BHB / 1869" and (later) "1890", l. 5-7/8" to 7-5/8";
a tablespoon, retailed by J. E. Caldwell & Co., Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, monogrammed on the reverse "MAP", l. 8-1/4";
a berry spoon, retailed by Ball, Black & Co., New York, New York, with gilt coquille bowl, the reverse monogrammed "J", l. 8-5/8"; and
sugar tongs, retailed by Ball, Black & Co., New York, New York, with talon grips, monogrammed on the bow "H de W. A.", l. 6".

  • Condition: **In generally good condition, with the expected patina of age, including scattered nicks and scuffs and some wear to the detail of the medallions. Slight rippling to the bowl of the spoon and rounding of the tines of the fork of the youth set. The gilding on the berry spoon is mellowed throughout and worn on the sharp ridges. Each piece marked either "Sterling" or "925" and with the retailer's stamp. The tablespoon additionally marked "Patent" and the berry spoon "Pat. 1862".
