Spanish Oak and Walnut Coffer

17th/18th century and later, the hinged top centered by a carved scene of the Capitulation of Granada, flanked to either side by the coats of arms of the Catholic monarchs of Aragon and Castile, the front bi-paneled and with scenes of mass baptisms within a Gothic arch, each corner with a carved ecclesiastical figure within a Gothic niche, the sides fitted with an iron handle and Gothic patterns, the lower band with heraldic patterns, raised on scrolling acanthine feet.

  • Provenance: Descended in the family of Rafael C. and Ethel Regan Goyeneche, Sr., Mexico City, Mexico; Havana, Cuba; and New Orleans, Louisiana.
  • Condition: **In very good "as found" condition. The two carved figures on the left side of the trunk are each missing an arm. On the top of the trunk, the horse is missing a front leg and its rider is missing a foot. Minor wear and dings around the edges. The interior once had a partition which is now gone and the mortised notch filled in. The feet are removable. Retains its key.
