St. Louis Coin Silver Presentation Pitcher

third quarter 19th century, by Eugene Jaccard & Co., the ovoid body with straight collar and integral spout, decorated with repousse flowers and scrolls on a matte ground centering a rococo scroll cartouche, with acanthus-crested handle and domed circular pedestal foot, with milled leaf-and-cabochon banding throughout, engraved on the body with "Premium / St.L.A.M.A."
h. 14-1/2", l. 9", dia. 6-1/2"; 40.90 t. oz.

Notes: The inscription identifies this piece as an award presented by the St. Louis Agricultural and Mechanical Association, founded in 1855 and which conducted the annual St. Louis Exposition from 1856 until 1902.

  • Condition: **Scattered dings and pinpoint dents, including one of the cartouche, and a shallow 1/4" x 3/4" dent on the outermost curve of the handle. There is a narrow 2" long dimpled area around the foot (at the base of the dome) where a compression dent has been hammered out, with a 1-1/4" area of the milled banding slightly flattened out of round and causing a slight "wobble". Some wear to the relief, but the pattern is still well-detailed and attractive. Apart from the Premium inscription, the piece appears to never have had a recipient's name engraved as there is no evidence of any removal. Marked (on the underside, in the foot) "E. Jaccard & Co. / St. Louis / Coin". A handsome piece with minimal condition issues.
