Stieff "Colonial Williamsburg" Sterling Silver Coffeepot, 1939-1948, Baltimore, Maryland, of "lighthouse" form with domed lid, vasiform finial, crested ebonized wood handle and conical right-angle spout, h. 11-1/2", l. 7-1/2", dia. 4-3/8", 34.36 t. oz. (including wooden handle). In 1939, Colonial Williamsburg contracted Stieff to make a line of high-quality reproduction American Colonial silverware. Introduced in a luxurious catalogue in 1940, this coffeepot appears on page ten, with a notation that it is after a 1715 piece by New York Silversmith Charles Le Roux (1689-1763) - presumably the near-identical example conserved in the Yale University collection. The 1940 price was $90, equivalent to about $1,500 today.

  • Condition: Overall Condition: Good. Some scattered scuffs, scrapes and dings, but no dents or repairs noted. The handle has losses to the black lacquer at the top and bottom, with the wood underneath exposed. Both retaining pins of the handle are very slightly extruded owing to shrinkage, with some give, but the handle is fully intact and functional. Marked (on the underside): "Stieff/Sterling" and the Stieff/Colonial Williamsburg incuse trademark in use 1939-1948, along with the pattern/catalogue number "R.T. 29".
