  • Condition: **In overall good restored condition. The painting was relined and restretched in the late 1700s/early 1800s. Relining has some abrading/tears to the back of tacking edges. There is some abrading around original canvas edges. There are two small losses to the upper left and right corners, craquelure throughout, and some tiny losses scattered throughout craquelure.

Under UV light, it appears that the painting was professionally restored/maintained over the years with conservative inpainting superimposed through layers of varnish - much of which is difficult to discern in the background as it fluoresces green. Varnish also obstructs much of the background detail, as it appears the figures may be in a cave setting. The faces of both the woman and boy/cupid are largely intact with newer inpainted "touch-ups". There is an ~2" x 3" bracket-shaped repair (tear) to the blue fabric in the lower center of the canvas. There is some minor filler to craquelure scattered throughout and some outlining/strengthening of fabric lines in the gold brocade work by the woman's left arm and lap (lower center bottom). The painting was previously framed (before 1923) in an oval frame; light indentations of its shape in the canvas are faintly visible in raking light. The right side of the canvas also has light vertical stretcher crease. Painting retains excellent detail and clarity of much color. Condition is commensurate with age, material and use. In addition to labels and wax seals, stretcher also has a pencil inscription with daughter Frances' name and house location - "Manchester, Mass.".
