Suite of Ten Ephraim Stahl (1767-1820) Gustavian Painted Side Chairs

ca. 1795-1805, the curved padded rectangular crest within a foliate-carved frame, above an X-form splat on a griffin-carved panel, the padded seat raised on lotus-carved tapering circular legs ending in peg feet, upholstered in dark charcoal linen.

Notes: Ephraim Stahl (1767-1820) was a chairmaker and the court carpenter to Kings Gustav IV Adolph and Charles XIII. Examples of his work can be found in several Swedish royal residences, including the Royal Palace in Stockholm and Gripsholm Castle in Mariefred.
