T. F. Cooper / Hyde & Goodrich Gold Pocket Watch
1850s, New Orleans, Louisiana, white porcelain dial with Roman chapters, black sunken sub-seconds and gold fleur-de-lys hands, signed "T. F. M. McAlpin to Peter J. Cockburn", with 14k yellow gold half-Albert watch chain with rolled gold T-bar and two watch keys. watch dia. 2", 121.6 grams; chain l. 12-1/2", 22.9 grams (excluding keys)

Provenance: Estate of Dr. Carroll Ball, Jackson, Mississippi.

Notes: The precise circumstances of the presentation of this watch are not known, but the gentlemen involved are readily identified as prominent New Orleans businessmen of the time. Robert Merrie McAlpin (1820-1863) was a native of Cincinnati, Ohio who moved to New Orleans in the 1840s, serving as an officer in the 42nd Regiment of the Louisiana Militia. He later established a grocery business (importing hams and lard from his native Cincinnati) and was active in local Whig politics, running for Sheriff in 1849 and appointed Superintendent of the New Orleans Mint in 1850-1853. Advertisements in the Times-Picayune in 1853 show him selling "Mexican petit gulf cotton seed" and it is likely that he made the acquaintance of London-born cotton factor Peter John Cockburn (1811-1894). Cockburn was associated with commission merchants Oakey and Hawkins, and became a partner in the firm after Oakey's death in 1856. McAlpin returned to Ohio after the outbreak of the war, perhaps conflicted by both his Northern heritage and Whig politics, and there soon after in 1863. Cockburn remained a successful cotton merchant in New Orleans until his death in 1894.
