"The Oldest Bale of American Grown Cotton"

a sample of the cotton from a ca. 1863 antebellum bale surrounded by mimeographed documentation including a history of the bale by Pierce B. Dugan of the First National Bank of West Point, Mississippi, 1926 affidavit summaries of the John Peden and George Peden attesting to the sample's origin, a 1940 affidavit of Alvin P. Goldman attesting that the bale had been in the possession of the Lesser Goldman Cotton Company of St. Louis, Missouri since 1904, and a 1954 Spinning Report on a sample from Acco Fiber and Spinning Laboratory, Houston, Texas, the sample presented on a black-painted wooden block, the documentation presented matted in ochre moire, with cavetto-molded slip, glazed and in a narrow wood frame, the reverse fixed with a letter from the Louisiana State University Agronomy Department, dated January 17, 1967, to Eli W. Tullis, which accompanied the documentation provided by the New Orleans Cotton Exchange's donation of the bale to LSU.
