  • Notes: Born into a Philadelphia family and apprenticed at a young age to a leather smith, Thomas Doughty was largely self-taught, debuting as a landscape painter in 1816 at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. An early pioneer in the American landscape tradition, Doughty adapted the English style he learned through copying paintings in the collection of his Baltimore patron, Robert Gilmor, Jr., into a distinctly American genre - the conservative and subdued palette, and masses of indistinguishable foliage characteristic of English landscapes were transformed under Doughty into contemplative vignettes drawn from outdoor sketches of New England rivers and mountains. The study of nature created a comparative realism unique to the American experience that revitalized interest in the landscape painting and laid the foundation for the Hudson River School's epic canvases drawn from light and infused with Romantic grandeur. This fine sketch, believed to be the last work by the artist, freely executed with somber clouds and sable grounds, belies the sublime skies to come.
