Three "Picture Back" Coin Silver Teaspoons

late 18th century, with pointed handle and die-stamped picture heel, including:
a left-facing bird-back, by James Kendall (1768-1808), Wilmington, Delaware, monogrammed "CMS", l. 5";
a left-facing reguardant bird-back, attributed to Jacob Wolf, fl. ca. 1795, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, monogrammed "JH", l. 5-1/2"; and
a rare radiant sun (dandelion?) back, attributed to Lydia Moulton (1757-1823), Newburyport, Massachusetts, monogrammed "ML", l. 4-1/2".
0.95 total t. oz.

  • Provenance: The Estate of Stella R. Sharp, Natchez, Mississippi.
    Note: Catherine B. Hollan, author of the recent It's the Birds and the Bees and the Flowers and the Sheaves: Picture-Backs on American Silver (McLean, Virginia: Holland Press, 2025), says of the sun/dandelion back spoon: "a lot of firsts here". She notes that the design on the heel is unrecorded, as is the mark. However, comparing the style of the picture back to what she calls the "messy bush" picture back spoon of Ebenezer Moulton (1768-1824), and the similarity of the mark – script "LM" separated by a pointed cross – to a mark used by Joseph Moulton (1744-1815), Hollan attributes the mark and the spoon to their sister Lydia Moulton. Born in 1757, Lydia is presumed to have worked with her father, silversmith William Moulton (1720-1793) in Newburyport alongside her brothers. She moved with her father to Marietta, Ohio, where she married three times: to Dr. William B. Leonard (1737-1806), James Fulton (1754-1807) and Charles McKewen (d. 1820). She died there in November, 1823.
    Two plain "LM" marks from the Newburyport area have been attributed to Lydia Moulton (see William E. Voss' online "American Silversmiths"), and the mark here – with its remarkable resemblace to Joseph Moulton's – seems a solid third attribution.
