Two Chinese Export Graduated Hand-Painted Brass-Bound Trunks, first quarter 19th century, composed of leather-covered camphor wood, each hand-painted with Chinese scrollwork and flowers, with campaign-style brass carrying handles, one with a shield-form escutcheon and Chinese characters painted on the interior, and the other with a Chinese brass butterfly-form escutcheon with incised decoration, the largest, h. 9-1/2", w. 25-1/4", d. 12-1/2".


  • Condition: Both trunks have scattered rubbing and slight losses to pigment, nicks and abrasions to the surface and some chips to the wood interior of the lid and box. The smaller trunk has a faded two-character mark on the interior. Very minor separation between leather and wood on lid. The larger box has more noticeable splitting between wood and leather cover. Scattered nicks to wood on underside and a large shrinkage crack on the interior of the box. Colors are still vibrant and both chests retain structural integrity. Wear is consistent with age, materials and standard use.
