Two Important 18th-Century Engraved Maps of Louisiana

including "Carte de La Louisiane et Pays Voisins…", by Jacques-Nicolas Bellin (French, 1703-1772), Official Hydrographer to the French King, hand-colored, published Paris, 1757; and "Grondvlakte van Nieuw Orleans, de Hoofstad van Louisiana (Plan of New Orleans, the Capital of Louisiana)", by Issak Tirion (Dutch, 1705-1765), after L. B. de la Tour's 1720 rendition, published Amsterdam, ca. 1769. The first matted, both unframed.
plate size, respectively 9-1/2" x 12-1/2" and 13-3/8" x 17-3/8", sheet size, respectively 10-1/2" x 16" and 14-7/8" x 19-1/4"

Provenance: The Tirion map was purchased at Jonathan Potter Ltd., London, U.K., 1982; both are from the private collection of Hugo Wedemeyer, New Orleans, Louisiana.

Notes: Tirion's map was created after Louis Brion de la Tour's 1720 plan of the city, two years after it was founded. Divided into three sections, the first is one of the oldest plans of the French Quarter; the second is a survey of the New Orleans environs, including the delta and the surrounding bayou; and the third section delineates the boundaries of Fort La Balise, which later sank into the marsh in the late 1700s.
