They soon returned to Europe, settling in Vienna, where Clemens was trained as a silversmith. His family returned to the U.S. in 1889, settling in Galveston, Texas. Clemens began working as a craftsman at Gorham in Providence, Rhode Island in 1901, where he worked for seven years producing pieces for their prestigious Martele line. In 1911 he settled in Pasadena, California, securing his fame as a master craftsman by producing the 107-piece "Orange Blossom" dinner service for brewer Edward R. Maier. His shop was noted for its sporting and equestrian trophies. He retired briefly to Texas in the 1920s, but returned to Pasadena by the end of the decade and re-established his shop, producing handsome everyday silver items until his death on October 21, 1963.
