Two Late George III Sterling Silver Sugar Baskets

London, first quarter 19th century, each octagonally paneled with bright-cut decoration, reeded rim, conforming handle and foot, the larger hallmarked 1802-1803, by William Abdy II (1759-1835; free 1781), with cavetto corners and gilt interior, h. 4-3/8" (7" with handle), l. 6-3/8", w. 4-1/4"; the smaller hallmarked 1809-1810, by Robert Hennell I (1741-1811; free 1763), monogrammed "JMH" and engraved with a crest of a Hands, Hay et al., h. 3-3/4" (6" with handle), l. 4-7/8", w. 3-1/2".

  • Condition: **Abdy: In generally good condition with surface wear, scuffs and dings consistent with age and use, but no breaks, repairs or significant dents. Gilded interior mellowed. Removed monograms on both sides, with one side somewhat thinned. Handle pins worn so that the handle does not stay upright, but it is securely attached. Hallmarked (on the underside) with: 1) the sterling lion passant; 2) the London crowned leopard's head; 3) the date letter "G" for 1802-1803; 4) the George III bust duty mark; and 5) the "WA" maker's mark of William Abdy. The handle part-marked with the lion passant. Marks nice and clean.

    Hennell: Scattered scuffs, dings and bumps, with a shallow dent on one panel of the foot. Repaired 3/8" tear at the rim where one handle hinge is attached. Crisp crest. Handle pins worn so that the handle does not stay upright, but it is securely attached. Hallmarked (on the underside) with: 1) the sterling lion passant; 2) the London crowned leopard's head; 3) the date letter "O" for 1809-1810; 4) the George III bust duty mark; and 5) the "R.H" maker's mark of Robert Hennell. The handle part-marked with the lion passant. Marks excellent.
