Before starting a new book I decorate the cover, inside and out. Often I paint into the first few pages, by way of tuning up...for it is always difficult to begin a new book. Frequently I use poems which are meaningful to me and usually appealing. Then I paint them and around them, so that the words become part of the pictures; and the picture becomes part of the words.

Between Two Worlds - the Life and Art of Ursula Sternberg

Throughout her life, Ursula Sternberg revealed an almost compulsive urge to create and surround herself with art, as evidenced by the designs meandering across the floors, walls and surfaces of her homes. Her sketchbooks and journals – what she referred to as her "visual diaries" - were filled with images of the people, places and events she experienced, and she meticulously and consistently created these throughout her life. While not averse to confronting serious issues, most of her work is bursting with bright colors and lush foliage, rendered in a variety of techniques and textures. The book offered here is exemplary of her approach.

Sternberg was born into a wealthy and artistically inclined Jewish family of art collectors and patrons, and as a young girl growing up in pre- war Cologne, Germany she was exposed to a wide variety of art and surrounded by artists, musicians, and intellectuals. She likely learned the rudiments of drawing and design from her father who owned a women's garment manufactory. The possibility of any academic training was abruptly crushed by the political climate. As the Nazis rose in power, her father liquidated his considerable assets and the family fled Germany, first to Holland and then to Belgium, where they spent the war years in hiding. These years were especially difficult for the young girl, who acutely felt the effects of the strictly enforced seclusion. It was after the war ended that she began to create her diaries, documenting her experiences.

A fortuitous first place in a design competition afforded Ursula the opportunity to move to England where she spent several years working as a textile designer in London, relishing both her freedom and the ability to support herself with her work. In 1956, on a visit to her family in Belgium, she met the musician and composer Jonathan Sternberg and the two soon wed. After several years in Brussels, the couple and their two young children moved briefly to New York before settling in Philadelphia, where they remained for the rest of their lives. While in Philadelphia, Ursula was an active and beloved member of the art community, holding drawing classes and salons in her home, and acting as a mentor to younger artists.
